Senior Ben Herrera didn’t just win the Iowa Amateur Golf Tournament on Wednesday, he broke records along the way.

Herrera shot 14-under to win the tournament, three strokes under the previous record of minus 11.

His 14-under was enough to win the tournament by ten strokes, another tournament record.

“The records are cool to have, but my goal going in there wasn’t to break any records, it was just to win,” Herrera said.

“So, it’s pretty cool that I get to have those records but I’m sure one day they will get broken.”

This victory was extra special for Herrera as his amateur career starts to wind down.

“It means a lot,” Herrera said. “With this being my last year at Iowa State, I knew this would probably be my last amateur before going pro and trying that after school. It has always been a goal of mine to win the Iowa Amateur. It’s the most prestigious tournament we have for amateurs here in Iowa.”

Even though the level of competition is high at the Iowa Amateur Tournament, Herrera felt good from the beginning of the tournament.

“I played a couple practice rounds and I really liked the course,” he said. “I felt like it was really set up well for my eye. During the tournament I got off to a good start and I just kept building momentum.”

That momentum helped Herrera to a big six stroke lead after the first day.

He said he felt like every part of his game was working well for him all tournament long.

When the last day of the tournament came around, however, Herrera found himself in uncharted territory.

“The last day I played well,” Herrera said. “I was a little tentative a little bit because I was trying to protect that lead. It’s hard playing with a big lead like that. It is a little different. I mean, I have played with leads before, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a lead that big.”

Herrera was able to maintain that big lead and finish the tournament strong with a pair of birdies on the last two holes.

He will try to take that momentum into qualifying for the United States Amateur on Aug. 10.

Last season Herrera qualified for the U.S. Amateur but his goal for this year is to make the match play portion of the tournament.

“My confidence is as high as it has ever been,” Herrera said. “I have been playing great, and that is just another boost of confidence for me.”
