State Fair to hold vote on Jackson sculpture

DES MOINES — Plans for a Michael Jackson butter sculpture at the Iowa State Fair are churning up so many comments that the fair is putting the question to an online vote.

The fair, known for its yearly butter cow, announced days after Jackson’s death June 25 that it would spotlight the King of Pop.

Fair spokeswoman Lori Chappell says Jackson was to be part of a butter sculpture of the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, but the fair’s original announcement only mentioned Jackson.

Chappell says because of the overwhelming response about the Jackson sculpture, both positive and negative, the fair will conduct an online poll from Thursday to July 16. People can vote at www.iowastatefair.org. Results will be announced July 17.

The fair is Aug. 13-23.
