Bootytronic, a local DJ group from the Ames area, is “devoted to the art of moving butts,” and plans on doing so at its upcoming performance Friday at Bali Satay House, 2424 Lincoln Way.

Troy Cairo, “DJ Kinky Kyro,” and Jenna Miller “DJ StickyBun,” are two recent ISU graduates who have deep love for the art of DJing dance music.

The duo plays dance music from the 1980s and classic hip-hop, but it leans more toward electro dance music, Cairo said.

Electro, as he explained, is a style of techno that uses intense synthesized sounds and beats. In addition to DJing, Cairo said he also loves seeing people enjoy their music.

“I really love this music. I just feel that not enough people know about it. It’s really fun to play a song and everybody is really into it and everybody goes nuts. It just feels great. I just really love dance music,” Cairo said.

Cairo and Miller aren’t average DJs though; the two take various songs and mix them together on a set of CD players called decks. Mixing is taking two or more tracks and matching up the beats, so more than one song can be played at the same time. This allows the DJ to go from one record to the next without having to stop between tracks.

Cairo originally started Bootytronic about a year and a half ago.

Adrian Navarro, “DJ Navarro,” joined the team shortly after its creation, and last October, Miller became part of the group as well.

The three played together as a trio from October of 2008 to May, until Navarro moved out of state.

Bootytronic plays about once every two weeks, on average, and plays at many venues, including the ISU Fashion Show, which it considers to be its biggest performance. Recently, the group played the after party for this year’s 80/35 concert and at the Bali Satay House.

Cairo said some of their most successful shows have been at Bali, and he remembers the bar being at full capacity, with a line outside as well. But it isn’t just the fans at Bali who love Bootytronic, some of the staff does to.

“The great thing about Troy is he always has something to ensure people will have a great night,” said Campbell Desousa, a bartender at Bali Satay House. “Troy goes out of his way to play the newest electronic music and a variety of electronic music. It’s a great time to dance.”

Bootytronic will be playing this Friday at Bali Satay House from 9 p.m. – 2 a.m. Cairo encourages anybody with an interest in techno or dance music to come for a good time.

Miller said their fans love their music and are just looking for a good time.

“The thing I love the most is sharing the awesome music I come across with everybody or the people who appreciate it. The people who show up for Bootytronic are up for anything, and they’re ready to hear it. Getting to play for people who really appreciate it is one of my favorite things about this,” Miller said.
