Iowa State is a business. The
student is the consumer. The administration, faculty and staff are
paid, by students, their parents and alumni, to educate students
and continue the proud legacy of one of the oldest land grant
institutions in America.

But most students probably
don’t know about the impending effects of budget cuts and how they
will affect their college. Instead, students are completely unaware
that important services have been cut and class sizes have
increased.

It’s like buying a cell phone
and not caring if the company decides to change your terms of
service, limiting you to 20 texts per month and charging you for
calling only certain people.

This is our
education.

Many of us are deeply in debt
to pay for this education, and if we are at all concerned about its
quality, we should pay attention to what is changing. Let’s put
aside superfluous activities and fancy technology, and focus on
what really matters: what, who and how we’re taught.

This semester, we have not
encouraged students to get out and voice their opinions enough.
Talk to your professors and e-mail administrators about how you
want your money to be spent.

Although students should be
mindful that cuts are necessary, they can still help determine
which cuts will have the least adverse effect on the educational
standards of Iowa State.
