TRACK AND FIELD:Athletes find success over weekend

Men’s team has solid weekend

Whether they were in California or Kansas, the Cyclones pulled together an all-around good weekend.

The distance and throwers’ squads traveled out west for the Mount Sac Relays in California and a few other meets in the region, while the sprinters traveled down to Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Relays.

The big news for the track team this weekend was Hillary Bor’s return to the track for the steeplechase. Bor finished second with a time of 8 minutes, 48 seconds. Senior Kiel Uhl ran the 5,000-meter run at Mount Sac. Uhl also finished second with a time of 13:55, which provisionally qualifies him for the regional meet. Uhl’s time is also only seven seconds off of the automatic regional qualifying time.

As for the sprinters at the Kansas Relays, senior Eric Parker finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63. The 1,600-meter medley team placed second with a time of 3:38.

Next for the track team is Drake Relays starting Thursday.

Elahi highlights weekend for women’s team

This weekend, the ISU women’s track and field team split up to compete at several different meets across the country.

The team also had several winners at each meet as they continue to prepare for the Big 12 Championships next month.

At the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan., freshman Kianne Elahi got her first victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 59.7 seconds.

Elahi had been struggling to break the 60-second mark in the race, but managed to do so in the event final and won the race by almost a full second.

Along with Elahi in Kansas was junior Lashawn Wright, who took second place in both the 100- and 200-meter competitions.

She was unable to hit her personal best, but dominated both of her preliminary heats on Friday before finishing a close second in both finals Saturday.

Wright also competed for the third-place 4-by-100-meter relay team with juniors Jenna Caffrey and Monique Hawkins and senior Leia Jackson.

Freshman Jordon Andreassen turned in a surprising second-place finish in the heptathlon event, as well. Andreassen scored 4,552 points in the event, well over the 4,200 needed to qualify her for the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Meanwhile, in California at the Long Beach Invitational the throws group had four top-10 finishes in the shot put.

The event was won by freshman Danielle Frere, who had a throw of 48 feet, 10inches. Sophomore Britta Christofferson and freshman Laishema Hampton finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while senior Amy Waggoner finished tenth.

Christofferson also took second place in the hammer throw.
