MEN’S TRACK: Team targets qualifying for regional competition
April 28, 2009
The Drake Relays are over; it’s time to move on to the next meet.
Head track coach Corey Ihmels repeated this sentiment to his team.
This weekend’s Arkansas Twilight meet isn’t quite as prestigious as the Drake Relays, but the team is treating it just like any other meet. Ihmels has always stressed the importance of the Big 12 conference meet and looks at this meet especially as a meet to get everything together before conference.
“It’s just another chance for us to have a high level of competition; it’s our last chance to show off the team before the conference meet,” Ihmels said.
Not everyone, however, will travel to Arkansas to compete this weekend. Many of the distance team members will be sitting this meet out. Those members include Hillary Bor, Guor Marial and Kiel Uhl. Bor and Uhl both competed in multiple events at Drake this past weekend, and Ihmels said they need some rest before the conference meet.
“We’re not going to travel too many distance guys this weekend,” Ihmels said. “You can only do so much, and I think a lot of them need some rest and recovery.”
Ihmels said he is telling his team to rest this week, and with Dead Week and finals coming up, he wants them all ready for the conference meet.
Possibly the only group that will be going their hardest this weekend is the 4×100-meter relay team. The relay squad has been knocking on the door of the regional qualifying time for five weeks, and sprint coach Nate Wiens said they are ready.
The 4×100 team has struck some bad luck in recent meets as the relay team tends to run into rain. Every meet the team has run so far has been in the rain, which affects its time. Wiens said that this weekend, the team will get the regional mark of 40.66. The team has been hitting the 40.8 range the past few weeks.
“There’s not a lot that needs to be worked on.” Wiens said. “Our handoffs are good — it’s just a matter of everyone putting it on the line on the same day and everyone feeling good.”
Ian Warner, a member of the 4×100 team, will be getting back on the track after his false start at the Drake Relays in the 100-meter dash. Warner told his coach this week that he was ready to get back on track.
“He’s never false started before,” Wiens said, “He said ‘I don’t know why I did. It’s just one of those things that happened, but we’re going to get back on the horse and we’re going to roll on to the next meet,’ so he’s already refocused.”
