LETTERS: Libertarian truth not found in Diabes’ rant
April 22, 2009
In response to the April 21 commentary “Libertarian ideology perfect fit for wealthy:”
Diabes’ rant is something one expects to find in a back-alley blog rather than published in The Pitt News and then ordered for republishing in The Daily.
I began writing rebuttals to each of his criticisms of libertarian philosophy when I realized how asinine and childish it was.
Diabes tells a comical story of a neurotic individual who wins the lottery and becomes compelled to buy a diamond-encrusted ball pit, befriend the Rockefellers, condemn Barack Obama to “Dante’s proverbial Marxist ring of hell,” give a couple million dollars to a friend for a house at 57.8 percent APY (he means APR), keep his children home from school, never contribute to society, and most importantly, register as a Libertarian.
It’s important for the reader to know fact from fiction and truth from fairy tales (like Diabes’). Nothing he describes in any way resembles a Libertarian. Libertarians believe in the core principle this nation was founded on, liberty — the liberty to live your life how you see fit, choosing what you do with your time and your body; the liberty to decide whom you work for, at what wage, and to keep the fruits of your labor; the liberty to marry whomever you want and to do whatever you want, so long as it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others.
This is the truth about Libertarians. You can learn more by Googling it.
