SOFTBALL: Cyclones aim to end six game losing streak against Nebraska
April 12, 2009
The Cyclones are preparing for a mid-week home and away series with the Cornhuskers this week.
Iowa State will host Nebraska at the Southwest Athletics Complex on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. then travel to Lincoln for the second game of the series on Thursday, starting at 5 p.m.
In the series, the Cyclones will try to snap a six-game losing streak dating back to their 6-0 loss against Drake on April 2. The streak is the longest by a Cyclone team since a seven-game losing streak last season.
During the current streak, the Cyclones have been outhit 57-34 while being outscored 34-7.
The losing streak has not been helped by injuries. The Cyclones lost three of their four pitchers. As a result, their remaining pitcher, Rachel Zabriskie, has pitched 36.2 of the team’s 39.2 innings during the losing streak. In all, Zabriskie has pitched 64.2 innings in just over three weeks.
There may be some rest on the horizon for Zabriskie, however, as freshman Lauren Kennewell has started to come back from her preseason injury, pitching two scoreless innings for Iowa State last week.
Another Cyclone that has missed time is sophomore outfielder, Carleigh Berry. Berry is out after getting her appendix removed March 31. It is not clear how long she will be out.
Berry had been leading the team with a .319 batting average until her injury, .019 points ahead of the next-best hitting Cyclone.
