YEAR IN REVIEW: 2008-09

Kyle Oppenhuizen —

It’s been an interesting season for ISU athletics.

There have been some fun moments on the playing surface for Cyclone teams. But more than that, this year will likely be looked back on for what happened off the field, court or mat, as well as some unprecedented success on it.

To start, lets consider where the school-year began.

The ISU football team had an up-and-coming coach taking his second year at the helm. The men’s basketball team was largely unknown, but the women’s basketball team was coming off an NCAA Tournament run. The volleyball team had been experiencing unprecedented success, and the wrestling team was in good hands.

Each team would have a story line play out just a little differently than the expectations suggested. Some events brought unprecedented success, while some brought uncertainty for the future.

Consider:

– The football team suffered through at 2-10 season before unexpectedly losing its head coach.

– The volleyball team went on a record-setting Elite Eight run.

– The wrestling team was third in the nation at the NCAA Championships, and then lost a coaching legend as its head coach.

– The men’s basketball team spent much of the year wondering whether its best player would come back to the team or not.

– The women’s basketball team commemorated the 10-year anniversary of Bill Fennelly’s first Elite Eight team with another deep tourney run.

Interesting, indeed.
