EDITORIAL: Seek affection, activities in real life, not from virtual life
March 31, 2009
A recent video game contest in San Francisco focused on developing a game about losing one’s virginity. The winning idea settled on a series of mini-games, including picking the right outfit for the occasion and not falling off the top bunk in a college dorm room — all performed on a Nintendo Wii or similar gaming system.
This seems to represent a recent trend of sex in cyber form. In November, a Scottish couple got a divorce after the wife caught her husband cheating on her in the computer game “Second Life.” Furthermore, the couple actually started relationships with others they met on the game after the divorce.
Enough already! It’s one thing to get the enjoyment of killing monsters or hitting a home run on a video game. But there must be better ways to spend your life than having cybersex. In fact, here are a few.
Have real sex
Seems simple enough. If you spend your time seeking fake sex, you are obviously missing something.
Take a nap
It is typically believed, according to WebMD, that the average teenager needs nine hours of sleep per day, while the average adult needs seven to eight. Yet studies show that college students in particular suffer from sleep deprivation, which makes it harder to focus in class and study.
Better yourself
In today’s economy, being better at your skill than someone else is a huge plus. Immerse yourself in your major. Do extracurricular activities outside of class that will help build a resume. Become an expert in whatever it is you want to do.
Work out
Physical activity helps reduce stress. It also helps keep off that freshman — or sophomore or junior or senior — 15. Not to mention that it will help you look attractive for your real date.
Hang out with friends
Go to a movie. Catch a Cyclone sporting event or Iowa Cubs game in Des Moines. Do something social.
Of course, there are many other things that can be added to that list. But before you let virtual reality dictate, of all things, your sex life, take a step back and realize what you could be doing.
