GYMNASTICS: Iowa State ties season-high scores Sunday
March 8, 2009
The Cyclones spent their Sunday afternoon in Nebraska, and although the team couldn’t get another win, it did get a season-high score.
The final score was 196.150-195.700.
“The whole idea of going to Lincoln was trying to get a score that we can count, help us into regionals and be seated in the place that we want to be. We knew that we needed to get something close to 196 and we were very close to it,” said coach Jay Ronayne.
Along with tying their season-high meet score, the Cyclones tied their season-high bars score.
The Cyclones started out on bars and the Huskers on vault. Iowa State tied its season high score on bars. At the end of the first event Nebraska was ahead 49.150-49.000.
“Nikki started off really strong, but as we went on I felt we were holding back a little bit, they weren’t quite swinging like we do in practice. As we got further through the lineup I thought it got better,” said junior Jody McKellar.
During the second rotation, the Cyclones headed to vault and the Huskers were on bars. After the second event Nebraska was still ahead.
“I think vault went really good. Everyone’s vault was really strong this meet. We could have hit a few more sticks but stuff in the air looked a lot better,” McKellar said.
The Huskers were on beam and the Cyclones took the floor for the third event. Thanks to the Huskers having some falls on the beam, the Cyclones had the chance to get ahead.
“We have been working our butts off on floor, mostly with the landings and showing it off and having confidence. I think today everyone really took that to heart. We hit everything like we do in practice,” said junior Katie Sweetin.
Going into the final event the score was 146.850-146.750 in the favor of Iowa State.
To finish out the afternoon the Cyclones and Huskers traded events, which put Iowa State on beam and Nebraska on floor. With Iowa State eyeing the victory, the Huskers came back with a strong floor routine.
“We had the door opened from Nebraska going into the last event and so we knew we had to rock beam. I knew that [Nebraska] was really good on floor and they would have to put up a season high to beat us, and they came out and put up a season high, they rocked,” Ronayne said.
The final score put the Huskers back ahead with a 196.150-195.700.
“Beam was a lot better for us this week. Everyone took what we did in practice on Thursday and applied it to the lineup. Everyone was really calm. We just did what we normally do in practice and I think that really helped us,” Sweetin said.
