WRESTLING: Cyclones earn share of third consecutive Big 12 title
March 8, 2009
For the third year in a row the ISU wrestling team won a share of the Big 12 wrestling title, finishing in a tie with Nebraska – the host of this year’s championship.
Iowa State neeed a last-minute victory from heavyweight David Zabriskie to push the Cyclones into a 70-point tie with the Huskers. The No.2-ranked Zabriskie defeated Missouri’s Mark Ellis, who was second in the nation, by a 3-1 margin. Zabriskie became one of only six Iowa State wrestlers to earn multiple Big 12 individual titles.
133-pound wrestler Nick Fanthorpe added his name to that list with a 5-1 win against Oklahoma State’s Chris Notte.
Next up for Iowa State will be the NCAA Championships, which are being held in St. Louis, Mo., March 19-21
