141 pounds – No. 3 jr. J Jaggers (Ohio State) pinned No. 6 Nick Gallick (ISU), 1:48.

Gallick scored a takedown off of the opening whistle, but the he defending-NCAA Champion caught Gallick with a cradle soon after, scoring a key win in the team race.

Up next: Virginia Tech so. Christopher Diaz (38-11), who beat Oklahoma State’s Jamal Parks, 4-3, to reach the round of 12. Diaz lost his opening round match to No. 2 Zach Tanelli of Wisconsion, 8-4. Diaz beat Missouri Big 12 Champion Marcus Hoehn, 16-5, in wrestlebacks.

157 pounds – No. 1 Jordan Burroughs (Nebraska) major dec. No. 9 Cyler Sanderson (ISU), 14-6.

Burroughs beat Sanderson with superior athleticism and explosiveness. It was Burrough’s third major decision victory over Sanderson this season.

Up next: Bloomsburg’s No. 7 Matt Moley (34-6), who beat Tennessee-Chatanooga’s Joey Knox, 6-1. Sanderson beat Moley for seventh place in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Moley lost to Minnesota’s Tyler Safratowich in the second round, 7-4.

165 pounds – No. 8 Jon Reader (Iowa State) dec. Ryan Patrovich (Hofstra), 5-2.

Reader hit a long single-leg shot and then broke through Patrovich’s defenses for a takedown 55 seconds in. Reader scored a reversal in the second period and built up 1:55 in riding time.

Up next: Edinboro’s No. 12 sr. Jarrod King (30-5), who beat No. 4 Moza Fay of Northern Iowa, 12-5. The two have never wrestled during their collegiate careers.

197 pounds – No. 2 Jake Varner (Iowa State) dec. No. 7 Brandon Halsey (CS-Bakersfield), 3-1.

Varner scored a takedown 30 seconds into the match off of a throw-by attempt. Halsey is bulkier and taller than Varner. He rode the Cyclone junior for 40 seconds of the second period, but Varner controlled the pace and most of the action.

Up next: Missouri’s No. 6 jr. Max Askren (29-5), who beat No. 3 Brent Chriswell of Boise State, 3-0. Varner beat Askren, 9-4, in the regular-season dual.

Heavyweight – No. 1 David Zabriskie (Iowa State) dec. No. 9 John Wise (Illinois), 3-2.

Another seemingly-miraculous win by Zabriskie, who fought off a stroung double-leg shot by Wise, fell down to the leg of the 6-foot-4 Illini and scored a takedown with seven seconds remaining. Wise took off his ankle bands, though there was still time left on the clock. Zabriskie waved his arms to the crowd in celebration.

Up next: Duke’s No. 5 so. Konrad Dudziak (30-2), who beat No. 4 Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State, 4-2, in one sudden victory. Dudziak is of comparable size and height to Zabriskie.

 

Consolations

125 pounds — Nicholas Bedelyon (Kent State), dec. Tyler Clark (ISU), 8-6

Bedelyon cradled Clark on the edge of the mat and flipped him inside the line, scoring four points in the first period.

133 pounds – No. 3 jr. James Kennedy (Illinois) dec. No. 7 Nick Fanthorpe (ISU), 6-0

It was a consolation round, but quality of opponents was that of a placement match. Kennedy, who placed fourth in 2008, scored a takedown one minute in and rode Fanthorpe out for the first period.

149 pounds – Mitch Mueller (ISU) dec. Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro), 8-4

149 pounds – Mueller pinned No. 12 Trevor Chinn (Lehigh), 0:44.

Mueller scored two important team points with a quick fall, which came from the neutral position. Mueller tilted back and put both shoulders to the mat for the fall.

Up next: Purdue’s No. 6 sr. Jake Patacsil, who lost to NC State’s Darrion Caldwell, 10-1, in the quarterfinals.

174 pounds – Duke Burk (ISU) dec. Alex Caruso (Lehigh), 7-6

174 pounds – Trevor Perry (Indiana) major dec. Burk, 12-4

184 pounds – Jerome Ward (ISU) dec. Dorian Henderson (Missouri), 6-1

184 pounds – No. 10 Christopher Honeycutt (Edinboro) dec. Ward, 3-2
