The weekend didn’t go exactly as the ISU women had scripted.

The Cyclones finished 11th in the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas this weekend, down from last season’s 10th-place finish. Their 17 points as a team was just one behind Oklahoma State in 10th, and just 8.5 points behind Kansas in ninth. The host, Texas A&M, won the team championship with 130 points.

The highlight performance for the Cyclones was turned in by freshman Kianna Elahi, who finished fourth in the 600-yard run. Elahi’s time of 1:22.30 was just .8 of a second behind the race winner, and the top five finished within 1.08 seconds of each other.

“The women left some points at home with Lisa Koll but Kianna with be with us for three more years,” head coach Corey Ihmels said in a news release. “In fact, we return an overwhelming number of points for next season.”

Koll was sidelined for the third-straight meet with a back injury. She would have been a favorite in the 5,000-meter run, and the points from her competition could have propelled the Cyclones up one or two spots in the overall standings.

When it comes to returning points, the Cyclones will bring back 12 of their 17 next season, losing only senior Grace Kemmey, who finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run.

The remainder of the points came from very young athletes, such as freshmen Laishema Hampton, who finished seventh in the weight throw, and Jordon Andreassen, who finished eighth in the pentathlon, as well as sophomore Jenna Caffrey who finished fifth in the pentathlon.

“The best thing about the great effort of Jenna and Jordon today was that both will be back here next year,” Ihmels said.

“There is no question that we are better than last year and our program has a bright future,” Ihmels said.
