The season seems to be looking up for the Cyclones.

The team got its first win a few weeks ago then posted a season-high this past weekend in a loss to Oklahoma.

The Cyclones hope to have another good show Sunday at Nebraska.

Iowa State is trying a new tactic for this meet and is keeping its plans quiet.

The team hopes to focus on the moment and try to worry a little less about what the end will look like.

Coach Jay Ronayne is confident that the gymnasts can have perfect routines if team members take their time and focus on the stunt at hand, but wouldn’t share what the game plan was and called it a “secret.”

“We have a game plan that we’re working with and we’re sticking with that game plan. Part of it, which I can share, involves not paying attention to the outcome but paying attention to the process,” Ronayne said.

The gymnasts are glad about the Sunday meet — it means more time for practice.

Freshman Michelle Browning and junior Megan Barnes had very similar attitudes.

“We got longer to practice this week, we had four days, which was nice because then we can focus on little things we need to fix, like sticking landings and cleaning up little things that will get us the higher score that we want,” Browning said.

The Cyclones are trying to keep a positive attitude and hope to use their time in the gym to tighten up a few things before heading to Nebraska.

“Of course we want to build on what we did last Friday and we’re really happy about scoring our high this season but we want to focus on sticking landings so we can pick up those extra tenths of points and continue to get high scores,” Barnes said.

The Cyclones and Huskers last competed in Ames on Jan. 16 and the Huskers won by less than one point.
