WRESTLING: Breakdown by Cyclone wrestler
March 21, 2009
125: Sophomore Tyler Clark, in his second NCAA tournament, got off to a solid start with a first round victory. The rest of the tournament took a turn for the worse after his falling in the second round and eventually being eliminated in Friday morning’s wrestlebacks. Tournament record: 1-2
133: After earning all-American status last year, junior Nick Fanthorpe had a much tougher trip to St. Louis. Fanthorpe advanced to the second round, but was halted in one of the longest matches over the three days by Penn State’s Jake Strayer. Friday morning ended any chance of repeating his all-American performance from the previous year, losing to No. 3 James Kennedy of Illinois. Tournament record: 1-2
141: Junior Nick Gallick turned in a solid performance at the NCAA championships, placing third for a second straight all-American honor. Gallick won both his first two matches before a showdown with Ohio State’s J Jaggers, who pinned Gallick en route to his second consecutive national title. In the wrestlebacks, things went well, as he picked up victories over the top two ranked wrestlers to capture third. Tournament record: 6-1
149: A great performance by Iowa State junior, Mitch Mueller, gave the team a boost in the early rounds. Mueller won his first round match before falling in the second round, but came back with a tough wrestleback performance, winning two before falling one win short of his first all-American honor. Tournament record: 3-2
157: Cyler Sanderson, a returning all-American, started off hot from the first whistle, winning his first two matches. In the quarterfinals, Sanderson ran into Nebraska’s Jordan Burroughs, falling to the eventual national champion by major decision for the third time this season. In wrestlebacks, he came up just short, losing one round before all-American status. Tournament record: 2-2
165: It was a great tournament for sophomore Jon Reader. The Cyclone wrestler took down his first three opponents to find himself in his first national semifinal. Unfortunately, Reader lost in overtime on riding time criteria to the eventual national champion, Jarrod King of Edinboro. In consolation wrestling, he advance to the consolation finals, where he came up just short against Iowa’s Ryan Morningstar, losing in sudden victory, 7-5, good enough for a fourth-pace finish. Tournament record: 4-2
174: After an injury-laden season, junior Duke Burk found some rhythm in the first round, upsetting Hofstra’s No. 12 Alton Lucas, 7-6. Burk fell to Missouri’s Raymond Jordan in the second round, but came back to in his first wrestleback. The season ended Friday morning, but Burk will look to next season for his fourth trip to the NCAA championships. Tournament record: 2-2
184: In his first tournament action, red-shirt freshman Jerome Ward came up just short of pulling a huge upset over No. 4 Kirk Smith of Boise State, falling 3-1. Ward advanced later that night, winning his first match at the national tournament before bowing out in the next wrestleback. The experience can only benefit the young Cyclone for the future. Tournament record: 1-2
197: Two years of coming up short of the summit, junior Jake Varner finally reached the top. Varner was never taken down en route to his first national title. The three-time all-American avenged his loss to Nebraska’s No. 1 Craig Brester in the Big 12 final by applying immense pressure and riding the Cornhusker long enough to win, 2-1, in Saturday night’s title match. Tournament record: 5-0
HWT: Iowa State’s top-ranked David Zabriskie was ever-so-close to a spot in the national finals, losing a heartbreaking decision to Duke’s Konrad Dudziak in the semifinals, 3-2. Zabriskie lived on the edge all tournament long, but the performance still garnered him his second straight all-American honor, placing fifth. In wrestlebacks, he was pinned by Iowa’s Daniel Erekson, but kept his composure with a big victory in the fifth-place match over Kent State’s Jermail Porter, 3-1. Tournament record: 4-2
