GYMNASTICS: Seniors’ last meet sparks surge of insperation

Not only is Friday the last meet before the Big 12 tournament, it’s also a special night for the Cyclone seniors.
“I think we’re really excited because it is senior night and it’s kind of like a salute to the seniors and a farewell. We all want to go out with a bang,” said senior Jennifer Salfen.
Seniors Jasmine Thompson and Salfen have been thinking about their last meet and trying to think of it as a normal night.
“It’s going to be hard but my plan and I think the teams plan is to go in and try not to think about it, just stay focused and have the same task that we’ve been having and to take it as another meet,” Thompson said.
It is a unique time for many people, with graduation approaching and sports careers ending. Thompson has had a tough week with senior moments.
“I’m already really emotional. This past weekend at Nebraska they had their senior night and I was crying for them because we’re really close to them,” Thompson said.
The Cyclone seniors will have their final meet against West Virginia at Hilton Coliseum.
The last few meets the team has been working with a secret game plan and the Cyclones don’t plan to change for this weekend.
“We’re sticking to it. The goal is to stay the same. It’s been working the past couple meets, we’ve been inching our score up little by little,” Thompson said.
During practice this week the Cyclones have been positive knowing their scores are improving.
The focus of practice has been cleaning up routines to hopefully adding a few points to scores.
“We’ve really been concentrating on sticking our landings because we’ve been giving away little tenths here and there and they really add up on each event,” Salfen said.
Iowa State hopes to give its seniors a solid last meet before competition truly begins. The team plans to go out this Friday with good attitudes and have a great night.
“We’ve been building the last couple meets so we want to keep doing that and keep building on our scores. We want to go out there and have a lot of fun,” Salfen said.
