It’s Over: Stanford knocks out Iowa State
March 29, 2009
BERKELEY, Calif. — Jayne Appel came just four points short of a tournament record, scoring 46 points as Stanford dominated Iowa State, 74-53, on Monday in the Elite Eight.
Iowa State (27-9) appeared to be a step slow to the Cardinal in all areas of the game.
Stanford (33-4) shot 53.8% to Iowa State’s 36.2%. The Cardinal outrebounded Iowa State 45-17, including 13 on the offensive end. Stanford also got to the line 20 times to only seven for the Cyclones.
Amanda Nisleit led Iowa State with 17 points, and Heather Ezell scored 10, all in the second half. No other Cyclone was in double digits. As a team, Iowa State shot 7-of-26 (26.9%) from 3-point land, with five of those shots coming from Nisleit.
ISU coach Bill Fennelly said at halftime it was part of his plan to shut down Stanford’s 3-point shooting, as the Cardinal hit 13 threes in an 83-45 win over the Cyclones in November. Instead, it was Appel that scorched the ISU defense with lay-up after lay-up in the paint.
Appel also pulled down 16 rebounds, seven coming on offense.
Iowa State’s season ends as only the second squad to reach the Elite Eight in school history. Stanford moves on to the Final Four, where it will play either Connecticut or Arizona State out of the Trenton Regional.
