Finally, a win.

After starting the season 0-7,the Cyclones also got their first win of the season with a final score of 194.600-191.475 on Friday. Coach Jay Ronayne thanked the fans for the energy and support during the Beauty and the Beast match, and also showed relief at finally getting in the win column.

“Winning is everything. The biggest thing that could happen to us right now is a win,” Ronayne said.

The Cyclones also made school history Friday night on bars.

The Cyclones were lead by Ceilia Maccani with a 9.925. This score tied the fourth-highest all-time score in ISU history.

“The line-up was so aggressive and it just built and built and by the time I got up there I was like ‘OK, I’m going to hit my routine there’s no doubt about it,’” Maccani said. The Cyclones won the event with a 48.975-48.300. After the second event the Cyclones were ahead with a 97.750-97.200.

“Bars, I couldn’t be more happy,” Ronayne said.

Even though the Cyclones were on beam, and the Gophers were on floor, it seemed as though everyone was on floor for the third event.

“We had some issues, we had some problems staying up there. We have to take advantage of those opportunities and stay on the equipment,” Ronayne said, “We could have said we don’t have a high score so what’s the point, but we didn’t. The girls took it upon themselves to be awesome.”

Nikki Dilbert, Michelle Browning and Jody McKellar fell off the beam. Senior Jasmine Thompson, however, was able to stop a trip to the floor with a balance check. The Cyclones were lead by 9.775 from both Ashley Kent and Maccani.

“Beam, we’ve been doing really, really good in practice and I don’t know if it was nerves or something that’s getting to everyone but we’re just going to go back into practice and clean up,” Maccani said, “We just need to get the confidence back.”

Even with falls the Cyclones were still ahead with a 145.325-144.550, with a rotation ending score of 47.575-47.350.

Iowa State was able to finish out the night on floor as Minnesota moved to beam, and was finally able to hold on for a win. Katie Sweetin beat her season high score with a 9.850. The Cyclones were lead by Jasmine Thompson who tied her season high with a 9.900. The Cyclones beat the Gophers in the final event 49.225-46.925.

“After coming off of Iowa this past Monday we went into the gym Tuesday and we just did tumbling, no routines, just tumbling, getting back to the basics,” Thompson said, “Jay Santos was helping us and it worked out.”

For the first event of the night, the Cyclones kicked it off on vault and the Gophers began on bars. The unique situation of having the wrestlers on the same floor at Hilton provided for an interesting exchange, as Thompson had to ask one Minnesota wrestler to step a little bit closer to the wrestling mat during one of her passes.

Iowa State still said the overall vault performance was good.

“Vaults been better and getting more consistent. We still need to work on landings,” Thompson said, “As a whole it’s looking good. Everyone’s confident and we’re staying tall on landings.”

The Cyclones were lead by Maccani with a 9.800.
