A single forfeit by the ISU wrestling team came back to be the deciding points as the second-ranked Cyclones fell to No. 5 Missouri, 18-15.

Both teams saw great performances by several individuals, with the Cyclones and Tigers each winning five matches, but the absence of junior Nick Fanthorpe (133) due to injury forced coach Cael Sanderson to forfeit the weight.

No bonus points were scored by either squad, but Missouri (18-3, 3-1 Big 12) used a big upset and several key wins to propel it to one of the biggest wins of the year.

At 141 pounds, Missouri’s tenth-ranked Marcus Hoehn scored a 4-3 decision over No. 3 Nick Gallick in overtime to give the home team a boost. With the score tied at three apiece, the two wrestlers went to sudden victory where Gallick was hit with a stalling call, ultimately ending the match.

Iowa State (13-3, 2-1 Big 12) suffered another heartbreaking loss at 165 pounds when seventh-ranked Jon Reader fell to No. 5 Nick Marable, 3-2, after a third period takedown.

Not all was bad for the Cyclones on an individual basis. In one of the premiere matches of the dual, top-ranked junior Jake Varner (197) used four takedowns en route to a 9-4 decision over No. 4 Max Askren for Missouri.

Following the 197-pound bout, the clash between the top two heavyweights in the nation lived up to the pre-meet hype. The Cyclones second ranked junior, Dave Zabriskie, scored an escape in second tiebreak to upset the Tiger’s No. 1 wrestler, Mark Ellis 2-1.

The loss knocks the Cyclones back into a tie with Missouri in the Big 12 dual team standings, but with a victory over Nebraska in next week’s conference finale, Iowa State would finish in a three-way tie for first place.
