With an 0-4 record to start the season, the 20th ranked ISU gymnastics team has more on its mind than just picking up that first win.

Revenge from a pair of losses last year would be nice, too.

“I know they kicked our butts last year,” said head coach Jay Ronayne. “I know they have the athletes and the desire to kick our butts again. I know they’re scoring very well; last week they had their season high. I know we’re going into their gym and not ours, so with all those things stacked up against us we have to be sharp. That’s what we’re training for this week.”

The Cyclones know if they hope to beat the No. 18 Gophers, they can’t have any little mistakes. The Cyclones have been working hard on making all their moves and routines flawless.

“We’re just working on perfecting the little stuff now because generally all the big stuff, all our confidence, is there. We just have to take away the little steps, take away the little checks and just trust that all the work we’ve done is there and to go out and show it off,” said junior Megan Barnes.

The Cyclones are hoping to improve on bars and floor from last weekend at Michigan. Iowa State knows it needs to stay in-bounds on floor routines and tighten up a few things on bars.

“Personally I’m just working on taking my handstands up on bars and that’s something we’re all focusing on because that can give us a lot of tenths on bars, and that can put us where we want to be and where we know we can be,” Barnes said.

For junior Nikki Dilbert, the trip to Minnesota provides a chance to go home. Dilbert is from Champlin, Minn., and hopes to improve her efforts on vault and bars this weekend.

“Minnesota is my home state so I’m excited to go back there and just do the same vault I did last weekend. I was able to do a really good one and I’ve been working on keeping that up and making it even bigger and better,” Dilbert said.

The Cyclones have been to Minnesota before and know they can get the score they aim for if they are calm and collected going into the meet. Iowa State lost 193.775- 193.625 last year in Minnesota’s Sports Pavilion.

“We’re going to Minnesota, we’ve been there before, we know what to expect kind of. We’re really just going in there trying to prepare for exactly what we want to do,” Dilbert said.
