LETTERS: Put time and money toward winning sports

As much of the student body would agree, the past few football and men’s basketball seasons have been a disappointment. We buy tickets, we watch with excitement, and we are consistently disappointed. The student body likes victory. And we have victories to watch, but you might be looking in the wrong places. Our consistent success in women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s gymnastics and hockey is a testament to the work ethic and determination of the athletes involved. Yet their hard work goes unrewarded. Each year, attendance at men’s basketball games outdoes the attendance at volleyball and hockey combined, and reaches higher numbers than women’s basketball. Women’s basketball was on the right track by offering free admission to ISU students. These promotions are a great way to gain interest and improve attendance. I propose, as an alternative to the status quo, an option that could be considered radical: go to sporting events that Iowa State is good at. I’m not taking anything from the football team or the men’s basketball team. They put in a ton of time and effort to do what they do best. But for a student who wants the best for the buck, those sports aren’t cutting it. So, start showing up for victorious sports. They deserve it just as much, if not more, than any other ISU sports.
