WOMEN’S TRACK: A look at the rest of the Big 12

Jake Lovett —

No. 1 Texas A&M: The nation’s top squad features an outstanding group of sprinters.  The Aggies have four of the Big 12’s top six times this season in the 200-meter dash, and have the top three triple jump marks in the conference as well.

No. 11 Texas: The Longhorns are led by senior Alexandria Anderson, who was an All-American performer last season and finished in the top three in five events at the Big 12 Championships last season.

No. 12 Texas Tech: The Red Raiders will bring the nation’s preeminent distance program to College Station, Texas, highlighted by arguably the best long-distance runners in the country, Sally Kipyego.

No. 15 Baylor: Another fantastic group of sprinters is led by sophomore Tiffany Townsend, who has notched provisional-qualifying times in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.

No. 23 Colorado: If Texas Tech has the conference’s top distance program, then the Buffaloes would be a close second.  Jenny Barringer carries the conference’s top time in the 5,000-meter run, and the second-best time in the 3,000-meter.

No. 24 Nebraska: The field is where the Huskers make leave their mark on the conference, featuring five provisional qualifiers in the jumps and throws, and four automatic qualifiers. Megan Wheatley has automatically qualified in the pentathlon, posting the nation’s sixth-best score so far this season.

Kansas State: The Wildcats bring in several of the conference’s top marks in the weight throw competition, and are one of the more experienced teams that will be competing this weekend.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have struggled in 2009, notching only one provisional qualifying mark in the indoor season.  That qualifier came from Lauren Bonds in the mile run during the ISU Classic in Ames two weeks ago.

Missouri: The Tiger throwers are some of the best in the conference, led by junior Krishna Lee who also posted season-best marks at the ISU Classic. Outside the throws they have just one other provisional qualifier, 800-meter runner Shannon Leinert.

Oklahoma: Probably the best squad not ranked in the top 25, the Sooners have eight provisional qualifying marks this season.  The star for Oklahoma will be senior Leslie Cole, who has notched the conference’s top time in the 400-meter dash, and is one of two automatic qualifiers running for OU.

Oklahoma State: The Oklahoma State women have not fared nearly as well as their in-state rivals, and come into the Big 12 Championships with just one provisional qualifier. Sophomore Mihaela Susa qualified in the mile run at the ISU Classic.
