The Cyclones were part of a series of upsets this weekend in the ACHA’s top five in which Illinois and Penn State also suffered setbacks. Iowa State fell victim to a split this weekend against then-No. 12 Central Oklahoma.

Although the mood of the team is a little low, teammates aren’t letting the loss distract them from achieving the rest of the goals they have in place for this season.

“We’re obviously a little disappointed with how things went this weekend. We were only able to get one win when we thought we were going to get two, but at the same time our goals haven’t changed. We’re still looking for a league championship and hopefully win it all at the end of the season,” freshman forward Brian Rooney said.

The loss made Rooney and the rest of the team realize that the up-and-coming programs are starting to get to a level where they can compete with anybody and knock off teams like the Cyclones if those teams are off their step for a game.

Freshman forward Jason Pacheco agrees the team needs to get their focus back for the remainder of the season.

“We only have a couple weekends left, so I think team wants to focus on winning those games before the playoffs,” Pacheco said.

Pacheco also feels the loss may actually help the team as far as reminding them of what they need to work on.

“It’s probably good for us before playoffs so we don’t go in thinking we’re the best or anything like that: We need to be ready for all teams. If were losing to them, we better be ready for the other teams,” Pacheco said.

Also worth noting is freshman defenseman Brody Toigo’s arm injury suffered in Friday night’s win over the Broncos. Toigo had scored at least one goal in six of the seven games previous to this weekend.

Despite the hole, the team doesn’t feel as if that put them at any sort of a disadvantage.

“You can’t put a loss on one guy,” Pacheco said. “Yeah, he helps the team, but in my opinion we have other guys that can step in and play the role just as well and should still be able to win games with.”

Rooney shares Pacheco’s view on the fact that Toigo’s injury isn’t having as much of an effect as some people may think.

“We put a lot of emphasis on the whole-team aspect. Obviously he’s a huge piece of it, he’s probably got the best shot in the ACHA. We will miss him while he’s out, but at the same time we feel that whoever we put on the ice at any time should be able to help us win,” Rooney said.

Rooney also praised teammate Nick Larsen, who played in Toigo’s spot this weekend.

“Nick Larsen came up this weekend and did a great job,” Rooney said. “We have so many good guys at every position that no matter who we put out there should be able to get the job done.”

This weekend the Cyclones will look to rebound in their final homestand of the season against Stony Brook University with Saturday night’s game being played at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
