FOOTBALL: Former Cyclone great dies at 74

Former All-American and Iowa State captain Dwight Nichols died on Monday in Dallas Texas at the age of 74.

As a sophmore, Nicoles led the Big Seven Conference in total offense, in 1959, he became the captain of the famous “Dirty Thirty” team in which the Cyclones team shrunk from 55 players to 30 players by the beginning of the season.

He led the Big Seven Conference in total offense all three years as a Cyclone, and finished eigth in the Heisman voting. His 638 carries were the second most ever at the time.
