SOFTBALL: Player held out after arrest

Michael Zogg —

Cyclone junior softball player Courtney Wray’s eight-game suspension from the team started last weekend after she was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated on Jan. 31.

The athletics department suspended her for four games for violating team rules, and softball head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler added another four-game suspension.

“I can’t answer anything beyond that,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said.

Wray started every game but one last year at a combination of shortstop, second base and left field for the Cyclones. She led the team in hits with 61 and runs scored with 32. Both marks rank third in the school’s single-season record book.

She served the first four games of her suspension last weekend at the Bradley Invitational and will be eligible to play again this Sunday against Jacksonville and Presbyterian after the first four games of the Jacksonville Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
