The Cyclones came home from Michigan on Saturday night with another loss, dropping them to 0-4.

At the end of the meet the score was 195.875-193.900. There were some proud moments and also a lot of room for continue improvement.

“We did get good performances from a few which is encouraging. It was a little discouraging to not see Megan Barnes have her usual awesome meet. That overall hurt the team score,” coach Jay Ronayne said.

Many of the Cyclone gymnasts broke season highs while at Michigan.

To start the night out the Cyclones began on bars and Michigan started on vault. The leading scorer for Iowa State was senior Jasmine Thompson with a 9.775. After the first event the Cyclones kept the score close to Michigan but trailed with a 48.675-48.625.

“I think overall we did a really good job. I think we still need to work on sticking a few more hand stands and sticking some dismounts. We stuck about two dismounts and we really need to focus on getting just those little tenths,” said Ceilia Maccani.

For the second event, the Cyclones and the Wolverines switched. Michigan increased its lead with an ending score of 49.050-48.200. Maccani beat her season-high with a 9.750. Thompson also beat her season high with a 9.750.

“Honestly vault is probably our weakest event right now. We work really hard in the gym and we try to make corrections in the gym, we try to balance it out and the fact that it changes when we come to the meet makes us need to take what we do in the gym and bring it over to the meet,” Thompson said.

The Cyclones leading scorer with a 9.800 was junior Nikki Dilbert, who beat her season high.

“Dilbert was able to get in on two events. She was our MVP last year so getting her back into the line-up, at least on these two events, was very helpful,” Ronayne said.

On the third event, the Cyclones took the floor and the Wolverines moved to beam. At the end of the third event the Cyclones were still behind with a 48.950-48.050, and were again lead by Thompson with a 9.850. Katie Sweetin beat her season high with a 9.650.

“Floor was very unpredictable this meet — we had almost everyone go out-of-bounds and a lot of messed up landings,” Thompson said.

For the final event Iowa State and Michigan traded events again. The Cyclones high scorer was Maccani — she beat her season high with a 9.850 and had the highest score for the event. The Cyclones ended the final event with a 49.000-49.200. Michelle Browning and Barnes also beat their season highs with a 9.800 and a 9.825.

“I started off on beam and I tried to set the tone strong and I think everyone else that followed just did the stuff we do in practice. We stuck six of six landings,” Maccani said.

Top all-arounder for the meet was Michigan gymnast Sarah Curtis with a 39.400. Thompson took the all around for the Cyclones with a 39.200. Barnes was also an all-arounder with a 37.575.

“Jasmine Thompson had a tremendous evening. She went out and did the job we expect her to do, be great in all four events,” Ronayne said.
