WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: No. 2 Oklahoma takes care of Iowa State

Nate Sandell —

Courtney Paris scored a season-high 25 points as No. 2 Oklahoma was able to overpower No. 16 Iowa State, 58-49, in front of a home crowd at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Iowa State closed to within two points of the Sooners with under four minutes left in the second half, but a string of missed shots ultimately doomed the Cyclones.

The cold shooting at the end of the game nearly mirrored the way the Cyclones opened the night. Iowa State shot uder 20 percent for a large part of the first half, allowing Oklahoma to open a 24-15 lead with 3:18 left.

But the Cyclones finally broke into rhythm as they finished the half on a 11-2 run, which was capped by sophomore Kelsey Bolte’s game-tying 3-point play. The offensive burst was enough to increase the team’s first-half shooting percentage to 32.

The momentum from the late-half scoring run seemed to have carried over to the second half, with Iowa State scoring five quick points. Oklahoma was unfazed, using a 61.9 second-half field goal percentage to out-score the Cyclones 32-18 to finish the half.

Paris attributed for more than half of her team’s 36 rebounds, grabbing a total of 19. By halftime she had almost already completed a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Her double-double was the first since her record-setting streak was ended last week by Tenneesee.

Danielle Robinson and Ashley Paris were also in double figures for the Sooners, recording 14 and 13 points respectively.

Senior Heather Ezell led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 15 points. Bolte added eight points of her own.

While they struggled to shoot consistently from the floor, the Cyclones were almost perfect from the line, sinking 10 of their 11 attempts. Oklahoma just miss matching Iowa State’s total as they went 10-12.

The loss put an end to Iowa State’s five-game win streak, while Oklahoma remained undefeated in the Big 12.
