MEN’S BASKETBALL: Missouri threes down Cyclones 77-46
January 18, 2009
A traveling portion of Cyclone Alley and a boost of team confidence following a home win were not enough for the Iowa State men’s team to overcome a 77-46 loss at Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
Greg McDermott’s club turned the ball over 14 times and were outrebounded 42-31. Iowa State simply struggled all afternoon with the quick pace of the Tigers. Missouri sits second in the nation in turnover differential, and first in the Big 12 in assist to turnover ratio, and its “40 minutes of Hell” style imposed an ugly game on the Cyclones.
The Tiger’s offense was able to get nearly any shot on offense, and as the second half progressed, the lead ballooned as Iowa State (12-6, 1-2 Big 12) was unable to force any pressure, or hit three point shots.
The Cyclones’ 46 points were a season low, and the team had an untimely, atypical performance shooting 2-for-17 from three point range.
Craig Brackins finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds, a disappointing outcome when his presence was needed to come up with a big road win. Justin Hamilton led Iowa State with 13 points.
Brackins’ performance wasn’t the only unfulfilled key the Cyclones needed to win on the road, but a disappointing showing in its third conference game will force Iowa State to learn quickly before facing the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks at home next Saturday.
Iowa State shot just 33 percent from the field, and only made two 3-pointers. Missouri, in contrast, made 13 threes, and shot 45 percent from the field.
Iowa State kept the contest close during the first half, and handled the press relatively well, with a majority of the Cyclone turnovers coming on Missouri’s side of the court.
Marcus Denmon, however, helped the Tigers pull away in the second half with three 3-pointers, enroute to his game-high 16 point performance.
Iowa State has a week off before playing Kansas at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. The game is televised on ESPN.
