WRESTLING: Cyclones blow past Beavers
January 19, 2009
Sunday’s west coast trip ended in a big victory for the Iowa State wrestlers, defeating Oregon State, 29-6.
The Cyclones (9-2) used a pair of big efforts by juniors Cyler Sanderson (157) and Jake Varner (197) to lock up the team’s eleventh straight victory over the Beavers.
Sanderson won by technical fall over Cody Weishoff in the third period, and Varner put the finishing touches on an impressive match by pinning Chad Hanke in the second period.
Despite a loss, Cyclone red shirt freshman Andrew Sorenson (174), who was filling in for the injured Duke Burk, took Oregon State’s Kyle Bressler to overtime before falling 2-1. Bressler has been in and out of the rankings this season.
The other highlighted match featured thirteenth-ranked Mitch Mueller for the Cyclones against the Beaver’s sixteenth-ranked Heinrich Barnes at 149 pounds. A locked hands call and a late escape by Mueller gave Barnes the match 6-5.
Iowa State returns home next weekend for the start of Big 12 duals, playing host to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
