WRESTLING: Beaver’s history puts them among elite

Jason Mcdonnell —

Most wrestling fanatics could easily name the top two winningest programs of all-time, Oklahoma State and Iowa, but number three could throw even the most avid fan for a loop.

The campus settled in Corvallis, Ore. is home to that team — Oregon State.

Sunday, the Cyclones (8-2) will travel to Corvallis to face the Beavers (3-5), who rank No.3 in all-time wins with 925, at Gill Coliseum.

The Coliseum and Oregon State have played host to the National Championships twice (1961 and 1980).

Both Iowa State and Oregon State carry enough history to write several books on when it comes to wrestling, but recently, the two programs have been going in opposite directions.

The Cyclones have been a consistent top five team over the past few years and are riding back-to-back Big 12 Championships.

The Beavers have struggled on the national stage, winning only one Pac-10 Conference title (2007) in the last 13 years.

Before that, Oregon State had won 45 conference titles in the first 85 years, and not once had the program gone more than seven consecutive seasons without one before 1994.

Iowa State leads the head-to-head series 12-1. The last victory for Oregon State came back in 1974, when the Beavers, coached by NCAA hall-of-famer Dale Thomas, recorded a 26-12 home victory.

The Cyclones are all too familiar with the Beaver’s coach as well. Jim Zalesky, now in his third season with Oregon State, is the former Iowa coach who led the Hawkeyes to National Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.
