GYMNASTICS: Progress remains goal after season-high score
January 28, 2009
The Cyclones have been continuing to perfect routines in order to get ready to travel to Michigan on Saturday night.
The team hopes to continuing to improve and build off its season-high team score of 195.225 from last weekend at Auburn.
“We just went up against No. 6 Auburn, and that didn’t scare us, so going against anybody else doesn’t scare us,” coach Jay Ronayne said.
The Cyclones have the chance to continue using freshman Michelle Browning’s new vault, and added Melanie Tham to the line-up for floor.
Ronayne is hoping for a score of 196 or better, and that means the Cyclones need to add some fractions of points to their scores.
“In practice we’ve been working on gaining that extra half tenth, whether it’s a stuck dismount, a hit handstand, feet together, toes pointed. So we’re really trying to perfect our routines and make them come together for the meet this weekend,” senior Ceilia Maccani said.
The Cyclones hope to continue to work out competition nerves and get their routines just right.
“Personally I want to do my vault how I do it in practice. In meets, I get a little jittery and I want to just go out there and compete it how I practice it,” Maccani said.
Michigan is traditionally seen as a Big 10 power house, but is ranked No. 20, two spots below Iowa State’.
“It’s funny, somebody told me a couple weekends ago, ‘You know, Michigan is not as good as they used to be,’ and I said ‘I don’t believe it, they are,’” Ronayne said.
Michigan is 7-2 on the season so far.
Iowa State hopes to limit little mistakes this weekend. In practice, the Cyclones have been getting many pep talks from Ronayne about those little tenths of points and how they all add up in the end.
The Cyclones know tenths of points can make a difference between a good score and their goal.
From the first to second meet the Cyclones improved by 1.600 points and from the second to third meet they improved by .450.
