LETTERS: President Obama appeals to entire world
January 20, 2009
President Obama really delivered in his inaugural address by appealing not only to the American people but to the entire world. For example, the speech revealed that Obama is continuing to plan to use diplomacy when it comes to U.S. foreign policy — which is a component that was lacking in the Bush Doctrine.
This was illustrated in the speech when Obama stated, “To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect… we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.” Additionally, Obama addressed impoverished countries by “pledging to work alongside” them. These statements about foreign policy suggest that Obama’s use of compromise and cooperative involvement to solve global issues will improve foreign relations and enhance the way America is perceived by other nations.
Although President Obama’s speech was somber at times, he was able to illuminate that America will be able to recover and progress from the current crises that we face.
Obama stated, “They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met.” Furthermore, Obama was able to lightly touch on some of the ways we will conquer these challenges — by laying “a new foundation for growth” (which entails creating jobs, enhancing telecommunications, making health care affordable, using solar energy, improving schools, etc.) and, most importantly, reminding us what our duties are as citizens.
