ADAMS: Sit back, read my political views; I hope that some of you this will amuse

Steve Adams

Twas the month before America became Obama-nation

Washington was stirring, with anticipation.

The cabinet was named, composed of Ivy-goers,

In hopes that it would perform as a team, like rowers.

The citizens were nestled unsnug in their beds,

While visions of eroded nesteggs danced in their heads.

And Bush in his lame-duck suit, and Cheney in his cap,

Had finished their work, giving us the wiretap.

When out on the White House lawn there arose such a clatter,

Bush sprang from his bed to see what was the matter.

It was the citizens, who had come to tongue-lash,

But Bush wanted no part of their reflective rehash.

He knew their minds carried plenty of ammo

Perhaps they could wait no longer for the final heave-ho.

When, what to his wondering eyes should appear,

But Obama, the man with words like Shakespeare.

A lean little man, so lively and quick,

The citizens grew hopeful he’d be the real maverick.

More wide-ranging than oceans, his promises they came,

He’d do this, then that, my did he exclaim!

“Now schools! And roads! Now, unemployment and immigration!

On, Iraq! On, Iran! On the damn Fox News station!

Whatever the price, my plans I will install!

I’ll save this country! I’ll save it by fall!”

But bills that go to the Senate do die,

When they meet with hard-liners, who will never ally.

So one has to wonder how much one man can do,

No matter how much political capital he did accrue.

For while I do not believe Obama’s a spoof,

I do not pretend that he’s partisan-proof.

In a two-party country he’s another Democrat,

And there’s no supermajority – the Republicans have that.

So regardless of his vision and vigor,

Obama can not be an all-unifying figure.

Though he has enough intentions to fill a book,

By optimism some opponents will not be shook.

His eyes may twinkle! His dimples may be merry!

But one man can’t make all others stop being wary.

There are still many who think he’s unfit for the job,

And they’ll go for Palin 2012, Alaska’s heartthrob.

But before we think of then and that woman’s highbrow,

Can’t we all just hope it works out somehow?

That the economy returns, that people stop getting fired?

That lawmakers for once forget the past that’s transpired?

That regardless of age or political affiliation,

Our leaders all have this one revelation:

Your country needs you, you elected leaders,

We need you to stop being nothing more than state-feeders.

You gotta buckle down, and do some good thinking,

Because, honestly, our country is stinking.

Now’s not the time for your deal-making and winking,

It’s time to pass good legislation and let BO do the inking!

But the problem, I admit, is there are no clear answers,

And all we can do is hope our reps fight the biggest cancers.

So in sum, let’s just hope that many things will improve

And of our leaders we’ll have reason to approve.

If you’ve made it this far I have one last thing to say, to you and yours, Merry Christmas, have a happy holiday!
