HOCKEY:In-state rival presents final test before break

Coming off a sweep of Ohio, Iowa State would like to get more of its lines involved against in-state rival Iowa this weekend. Iowa heads into Ames/ISU Ice Arena on a six game win streak with its record at 19-4.

Iowa State hosted Iowa on Friday before traveling to Cedar Rapids to play the Hawkeyes on Saturday, the last two games before coming back after the holiday break to play at Michigan-Dearborn on Jan. 9.

“We’re trying to do a better job of getting everyone involved instead of one line doing all the scoring,” sophomore forward Jordan Pascale said.

Head coach Al Murdoch echoes Pascale’s thoughts.

“It’s part of getting our team average up. We can’t get our team average up if we don’t have all four lines contributing to the score sheet”, Murdoch said.

Despite Iowa State’s significant lead in the all-time series against Iowa, the Cyclones don’t want to overlook the Hawkeyes.

“We need to meet them head on, play a physical game and test them,” Murdoch said.

Murdoch also feels that his team’s power plays and penalty killing units are playing well right now, which will help against Iowa. Murdoch also mentioned that Iowa has some good players and better depth that will also present them a challenge.

A big part of this series is having fun too.

“As far as I know, we’ve never lost to Iowa,” Pascale said. “We still always get up to play them. There’s always a big crowd and it’s always a lot of fun.”

The Cyclones are on a hot streak of their own as they continue down the homestretch of the regular season. Their remaining opponents are Michigan-Dearborn on the road followed by home series against Western Michigan, Robert Morris, Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma and Stony Brook, before finishing the regular season on the road at Illinois.
