Chris Colvin, a 6-foot-2-inch point guard from Chicago, signed a national letter of intent to play for Iowa State beginning in the 2009-10 season, the athletics department announced on Wednesday.

Colvin is a four-star recruit starting his senior season at nationally-ranked Whitney Young High School. Scout.com lists Colvin as No. 10 in the nation in point guards in his class.

Colvin has started since his sophomore year, and averaged 14.1 points per game last season.

“Chris is an explosive lead guard that impacts games in a variety of ways,” coach Greg McDermott said in a press release. “He has the uncanny ability to break down defenders off the dribble to make plays for himself as well as his teammates. His size and physical strength in the backcourt will be a huge asset to our program.”

Iowa State also signed transfer Marquis Gilstrap last week, who has only one season of eligibility left next year.
