FOOTBALL: Gridiron picks for Week 13
November 19, 2008
Week 13 Standings
1. Corey Aldritt (90-30, 8-2)
2. Chris Conetzkey/Nate Sandell (87-33, 10-0)
3. Luke Plansky (86-34, 8-2)
4. Matt Gubbels (84-36, 9-1)
Assistant sports editor Nate Sandell and Chris Conetzkey collaborated to make Team Sanetzkey’s picks this week
Iowa State @ Kansas State
Corey: Kansas State — Remember Iowa State’s upset win over Mizzou in coach Mac’s last game? Well, the same thing will happen for Kansas State in Ron Prince’s last game.
Luke: Iowa State — Cyclones break their 16-game road curse.
Matt: Iowa State — The Wildcats have mailed it in and they will lose their coach and their quarterback after this one.
Nate: Iowa State — The only thing that could make this game more exciting is moving it to a neutral site in Kansas City, possibly in 2009. You can thank me for the idea later, Mr. Pollard.
Iowa @ Minnesota
Corey: Iowa — Two teams headed in opposite directions, and it doesn’t help that the Metrodome will be half Hawkeye fans.
Luke: Iowa — Gophers are falling apart — Hawkeyes are rolling.
Matt: Iowa — The Gophers continue their slide into the Detroit Motor City Bowl.
Nate: Iowa — Gophers, you just lost four straight games. What are we going to do next? We’re going to Detroit!
Texas Tech @ Oklahoma
Corey: Oklahoma — Nobody is playing as well as Tech right now, except for Oklahoma. TiVo this game if you know what’s good for you.
Luke: Texas Tech — I changed this pick four times. The Red Raiders have to take advantage of early possessions and slow down Bradford and the OU running game.
Matt: Oklahoma — I flipped a coin and it came up on Oklahoma.
Nate: Texas Tech — Harrell and Co. quiet their critics by picking a up a win in Norman.
Michigan @ Ohio State
Corey: Ohio State — This rivalry has lost its luster, but ESPN tells me it’s the greatest rivalry in the history of sports.
Luke: Ohio State — Jim Tressel and Buckeye nation are going to enjoy this one.
Matt: Ohio State — It is great to see Michigan this bad.
Nate: Ohio State — Terrelle Pryor keeps Wolverine fans thinking “what if?” after leading the Buckeyes to a win.
Michigan State @ Penn State
Corey: Penn State — Spartans continue their Rose Bowl drought.
Luke: Penn State — The Spartans have lost 10 straight against ranked foes, but they will be an inspired team that can run with the Nittany Lions.
Matt: Penn State — The Nittany Lions clinch a trip to the Rose Bowl.
Nate: Michigan State — In the words of R. Kelly: “My mind is telling me no, but my body, my body is telling me yes.”
BYU @ Utah
Corey: Utah — One of the most underrated rivalry games in the nation.
Luke: BYU — The undefeated Utes have five wins by seven points or less, but will stub their toes at home in the doorway to a BCS-Bowl Game.
Matt: Utah — The Utes will find a way to win late again and gain themselves a place in the BCS bowl.
Nate: Utah — BYU’s only chance is to start saying they can’t play games on Saturdays, too. [ex. 2003 NCAA B-Ball Tourney]
Air Force @ TCU
Corey: TCU — Even though I’m still mad at TCU for beating Iowa State in the ‘05 Houston Bowl, I’ll go with them.
Luke: TCU — The No. 1 Horned Frog-run defense against the No. 4 rushing offense of the Falcons. Air Force is undefeated on the road this season, but has lost its last 10 games against ranked foes.
Matt: TCU — The Horned Frogs have been dominant at home.
Nate: TCU — TCU avoids a loss to the Falcons like Frogger dodges cars.
Florida State @ Maryland
Corey: Florida State — Both these teams confuse me, but the Terps have everything to lose, so they will.
Luke: Florida State — Maryland is 4-0 against ranked teams this season, but two of those teams have been complete duds.
Matt: Florida State — The Terps are ranked this week and that seems to be a jinx in the ACC.
Nate: Maryland — Bowden and the ‘Noles will bow out, gracefully, to the Terps.
Oregon State @ Arizona
Corey: Arizona — This game reminds me of when Arizona knocked off Oregon last year.
Luke: Oregon State — The USC-slayers have lost to Stanford and Penn State in weeks one and two, but lost only to Utah since.
Matt: Arizona — The Wildcats will knock the Beavers out of the Rose Bowl.
Nate: Oregon State — OSU is No. 2 in the Pac-10. I don’t know who’s worse — The Big 10 or the Pac-10.
Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati
Corey: Cincinnati — Would either of these teams even win two games in the Big 12?
Luke: Cincinnati — The fact that a Dave Wannstedt-coached team is in the coaches’ pool shows how talented Pitt is. But the Panthers’ two losses are to Bowling Green and Rutgers.
Matt: Pittsburgh — I have a bad feeling, though, that Dave Wannstedt will blow this one.
Nate: Cincinnati — It’ll be close, but the Bearcats will emerge as the front-runner in the Big-East.
