WBB: Women bounce Kangaroos in season opener
November 16, 2008
Despite sitting out most of the fall and playing an average of just 15 minutes in two exhibition games, junior Alison Lacey still showed no signs of rust in Sunday’s season opener.
The preseason All-Big 12 guard had seen limited participation in fall practice due to a nagging hip injury, but still managed to tally twelve points, seven rebounds, and five assists in 16 first half minutes during a 77-45 victory over UMKC.
Iowa State is now an unblemished 14-0 in season openers since coach Bill Fennelly took over in Ames in 1995.
After beginning the game with a sluggish offensive performance, the Cyclones warmed up to shoot 48.6 percent and score 46 points in the first half. However, the shooting numbers declined after halftime, as Iowa State finished the game with a 40.3 percent shooting mark, including a 7 for 25 (28.0 percent) performance from behind the arc.
Turnover numbers also increased with sloppy second half play, as the Cyclones gave the ball away 15 times in the second half compared to 6 in the first.
The Cyclones received a significant contribution in the post from freshman Ashley Arlen, who was just short of a double-double with twelve points and nine rebounds in her Iowa State regular season debut. Senior Nicky Wieben joined Lacey and Arlen in double-figures with ten points.
