FOOTBALL: Rumors regarding an unhappy Chizik denounced by source
November 10, 2008
On Friday afternoon, the ESPN Radio show Galloway & Company guest Brian Estridge claimed that he was told by an unnamed Oklahoma State coach that coach Gene Chizik regretted taking the job at Iowa State, saying he was more happy winning games in Texas as the defensive coordinator. Those comments spread all over the Internet on message boards and blogs over the weekend.
Since, both Chizik and Estridge have said that that report was false:
Gene Chizik, at his weekly press conference:
“I have spoken to the radio host of a show that, supposedly, this whole thing originated from, and he assured me that everything about that was simply not true … As for me, I want to make one thing very, very clear: You guys have been reporting on me for a year-and-a-half, and anybody who knows myself, my wife, my family; they know that we are firmly entrenched here in Ames. We love this university; we love who we work for; we love this football team; we love this community.
“If, two years ago, I had this same choice, I would do it again without any hesitation, whether we have won 10 games or two games. We are on a journey here that we will get done, and I’m as happy as I have ever been in the coaching profession, and I want to make that very clear.”
Brian Estridge, in a written
statement:
“Friday, on our radio show, Galloway and Company, we were having an on-air conversation about [TCU head coach] Gary Patterson possibly heading to Kansas State. We were also talking about Oklahoma State and Texas Tech at the time.
“I did not have any conversation with Oklahoma State coaches about Gene Chizik. I don’t know any Oklahoma State coaches. We were comparing being the defensive coordinator at a place like Texas and being a head coach at Iowa State and the risk and pressure involved in being head coach. That is how Gene Chizik’s name came up. It was not based on any conversation I had with anyone else.”
