Wide receiver Dez Bryant and the ninth-ranked Oklahoma State football team ran wild in a 59-17 rout of the ISU football team in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday.

The balanced Cowboy offense overwhelmed the Cyclones (2-9, 0-5 Big 12), gaining 682 total yards. ISU true freshman cornerback Leonard Johnson broke the major college record for kickoff return yards, taking nine kicks for 319 total yards.

Returns of 73, 72 and 48 yards helped Johnson top Clemson’s Justin Miller, who set the previous record with 282 return yards against Florida State in 2004. Johnson was eight yards shy of setting the NCAA All-Division record of 326 yards, which is held by Eastern Washington’s Bashir Levingston (1998).

Johnson knelt down for a touchback late in the third quarter and had one return for 15 yards in the fourth.

The Cyclones have now lost seven straight games, as well as their last 15 games on the road.

Bryant put the game out of reach midway through the second quarter, scoring his third touchdown on an 80-yard catch-and-run. That play built a 28-7 lead and was preceded by three straight ISU turnovers.

On the previous play, a long Cyclone drive ended at the OSU 12-yard line, where quarterback Austen Arnaud was hurried and threw an interception into the end zone.

Iowa State’s previous two possessions resulted in a lost fumble by receiver Marquis Hamilton and an interception by Arnaud.

The sophomore completed 20 of 35 passes for 240 yards, including a one-yard touchdown to receiver Sedrick Johnson with 3:05 left in the game. True freshman Darius Darks had seven catches for 113 yards.

Iowa State had 122 rushing yards in the game on 38 carries, including two sacks. Meanwhile, the ISU defense was overmatched by the OSU spread attack.

Entering the game, Iowa State ranked 113th out of 119 Div. I teams in pass defense efficiency, having allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 68.26 percent of their passes.

Robinson had the fourth-best passer efficiency rating of 183.9 of any Div. I quarterback and completed 18 of 27 passes for 395 yards, as well as an interception and five touchdowns, including four to Bryant.

The touchdown tally was a new career high for the 6-foot-2 star wide receiver, who had nine catches for 171 yards. Robinson’s fifth touchdown pass was a 95-yarder to Jeremy Broadway.

The dynamic OSU running game sustained drives, gaining 263 yards.

Robinson took six rushes for 66 yards and finished with the 461 yards of total offense — the second-highest output in school history.

Oklahoma State (8-1, 4-1 Big 12) was coming off of its first loss of the season — a 28-24 setback at No. 1-ranked Texas. The Cowboys had previously never scored more than 49 points against Iowa State.

Oklahoma State has scored 50 or more points in five games this season. The Cyclones tied the game, 7-7, with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Alexander Robinson, which was set up by the 72-yard return of Johnson.

After Robinson’s touchdown, Iowa State recovered an on-side kick but was called for an offside penalty.
