The ISU football team stumbled to another road loss on Saturday, falling to Baylor, 38-10.

Even when things began to go right, the Cyclones (2-4, 0-2 Big 12) couldn’t get out of their own way. Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, the team drove deep into Baylor territory before self-destructing.

On third-and-goal from the BU 4-yard line, the Cyclones were flagged for two consecutive false starts, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave the ISU offense a first down at the two. Iowa State then committed another false start, a delay of game and an illegal block before settling for a field goal.

Thirty-one of Iowa State’s 81 total rushing yards came during the drive. The Cyclones committed nine penalties for 65 yards in the first half and have now lost 14 straight games on the road — the second-longest streak in the nation behind Alabama-Birmingham.

Iowa State trailed 21-3 at half-time and 28-3 soon after. Baylor return-man Mikail Baker ran back the opening kick of the second half to the BU 25-yard line, but Iowa State was cited for an offsides penalty. Baker returned the re-kick 93 yards for a touchdown.

Baylor true freshman quarterback Robert Griffin completed 21 of 24 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter, Griffin threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to true freshman wideout Kendall Wright on fourth-and-12 — the first of three converted fourth downs that led to BU touchdowns.

ISU quarterback Austen Arnaud was 21 of 41 passing for 176 yards and had an inconsequential interception and touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Arnaud completed a nine-yard score to true freshman Sedrick Johnson with 9:41 to play, then threw a pick on the next possession. Arnaud was 10-for-20 for 73 yards in the first half. Four of Iowa State’s five first-half possessions took four plays or less.

Griffin had a negative-15 yards rushing in the game and was sacked three times. The dual-threat quarterback had a combined 365 yards rushing over Baylor’s previous three games, including 102 yards against Oklahoma.

BU running back Jay Finley took 15 carries for 60 yards, while Jeremy Sanders, Jacoby Jones, and Ray Sims combined for 78 yards on 18 carries.
