Throughout the season, the ISU soccer team hasn’t been able to make everything click at the same time in order to collect wins in the tough Big 12 Conference, and this past weekend was no different.

Iowa State went to Oklahoma and lost a pair of games to Oklahoma, 2-1, and Oklahoma State, 7-0.

The Sunday matchup featured the Cyclones against the upstart Oklahoma Sooners (3-14-1, 2-6-1 Big 12). The Sooners jumped out early on the Cyclones with a goal in the eighth minute by Whitney Palmer.

Despite trailing 1-0 going into the half, Iowa State’s play, aside from that early goal, was solid.

At the start of the second half, the Cyclones stormed out of the gates with pressure and had several chances that just missed or dinged off the crossbar. All of the attacking by the Cyclone’s front line eventually paid off in the 68:12 mark when junior Elise Reid netted the tying goal off a great feed from freshman Laura Wooster.

The tides turned one more time as the Sooners’ Ashley Farrand scored the game-winning goal with 10:03 remaining in regulation. The loss ended like many others of the season for Iowa State, coming close but not finishing the deal.

Ashley Costanzo played the entire game in goal for Iowa State and fended off four shots in her first start as a collegiate goalkeeper. Offensively, the Cyclones did something that they have not been able to do most of the season — outshoot the opposition. Iowa State recorded 20 shots and held Oklahoma to only 12.

A week after the Cyclones (5-11-2, 0-7-2 Big 12) allowed an astounding 37 shots to Colorado, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, the Big 12’s top offense at 3.5 goals per game, hung 33 shots on Iowa State in Friday’s game.

Oklahoma State pounded seven goals into the back of the net, while the Cyclones netted zero goals on only eight shots.

Oklahoma State midfielder Siera Strawser pulled out the hat trick with three goals, and Yolanda Odenyo, the top offensive player in the Big 12, tallied a pair of goals to add to her stellar year.

The Cyclones went with junior Ann Gleason as the starting goalkeeper, and they then made the switch to the sophomore Costanzo at the half, which has been the recent trend for coach Wendy Dillinger.

Both Gleason and Costanzo faced a barrage of shots by the immense pressure from the Oklahoma State front line and registered four saves.

The losses for the Cyclones over the weekend officially eliminated any chance at a run to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament, but the team will play one more game this season to try to notch a conference win going into the offseason.

A positive for the Cyclones this weekend was the amount of playing time the freshmen players were given. With injuries hampering the team all year, and adjustments being made down the stretch, the Cyclones have a lot to build on with the younger players getting big game experience.

Friday night Iowa State will play host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on what will be a farewell night for the team’s seniors.
