ISU families win honor as best of year
October 4, 2008
Family Weekend wrapped up Sunday in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union to honor two families of the year.
One of the winners of the Families of the Year honor was the Haden family.
David and Patty Haden are both graduates of Iowa State’s class of 1983. Patty received her master’s in physical education and health and was a four-year letter-winner on the women’s track and field team. David received his master’s in agronomy and worked as a research associate in the agronomy department.
“What sets us apart from other families is our years of dedication to Iowa State,” Patty said.
They have two sons, Michael, senior in agricultural business, and Johnathon, sophomore in child, adult and family services.
They also have a daughter, Christina, who also plans to attend Iowa State in the fall. Even their two youngest sons, Daniel and Brian, want to attend Iowa State in the future.
Brian, the youngest of the five siblings, said he felt “honored” to have their family receive this award.
The second winner of family of the year was the Judge family.
Although Tom and Charlene Judge, of Ankeny, are not ISU graduates, their two daughters, Laura and Lisa, both graduated from Iowa State.
Laura finished her undergrad at Iowa State in 2001 and received her master’s in criminal justice in August. Lisa graduated in May with a degree in sociology and criminal justice.
Tom and Charlene’s Cyclone traits were really put to the test when they helped Lisa and her fiancé, Ryan, take care of their newborn daughter, Sophia.
“I applied for this to show my parents how grateful I am to them,” Lisa said.
She said even though taking care of Sophia took a lot of time and effort, they still had time to attend all of the ISU football and basketball games.
Charlene said she was “shocked” when she found out their family won.
Gina Ruggiero, Families of the Year coordinator and sophomore in design, said “emotional involvement and dedication” are what set the two families apart from the other 10 families who applied. She said they are a representation of those families who are outstanding in the ISU community.
“We pick two families that we think represent tremendous Cyclone families and they are chosen as the Families of the Year,” Ruggiero said.
She said the Families of the Year were introduced at Cyclone Family Weekend Tailgate on Saturday and were recognized at half-time at Saturday’s game. There they were given a plaque and their biographies were read.
Ruggiero said along with receiving the title of Family of the Year, both families will have their names engraved on a bigger plaque and receive invitations to attend special events throughout the year from the ISU Alumni Association. She said they are working with Veishea to get the families on a float during the parade.
Ruggiero said students who attend Iowa State nominate their families for this award.
“For the students [who apply for family of the year], it’s a great way for them to say to their parents ‘thank you for all the support you’ve given me,’” she said.
