REVIEW: ‘Force’ brings back the Star Wars saga

Large yellow text scrolls up the screen, and the “Star Wars” saga continues in “The Force Unleashed,” an ambitious project from LucasArts.
There’s plenty that “Unleashed” does well. Thankfully, these are the important aspects, such as using the Force in new, awesome, never seen before ways. Whether the Sith Apprentice is hurling bolts of lightning, pulling TIE fighters out of the air, or however else he chooses to manipulate his abilities, the result is always enjoyable. You never feel as badass as when you’ve brought down a Star Destroyer with your mind.
Unfortunately, if you didn’t understand half of what I’ve just said, that’s going to be part of the problem. Although “Unleashed” is great for fans of “Star Wars” — due mostly to the amazing art direction and story that is not only well-crafted, but canon — those who aren’t into the franchise are going to find the game’s flaws a little less forgivable.
For one, there are some serious bugs. In one play through, enemies became stuck in walls three times, even during fights. In another instance, it was my own character who found himself on the wrong side of a junk heap. Three other times, the game experienced crashes that forced me to restart the system.
Enemies can be more than a bother, as the timing of some of their attacks will cause the player to fall down and recover just in time to be knocked down again.
Lastly, the technology running the game is sadly a bit ahead of its time. Although many objects react in accordance with the physics engine, the instances of truly realistic interaction are often limited to preset conditions, likely in an effort to conserve processing power.
“Unleashed” is a delectable treat for fans, but others may want to consider renting.
