City Council liaison seated

Allison Suesse —

The City Council Liaison position, a crucial component of the Government of the Student Body, has been filled.

Molly Tracy, junior in anthropology, was appointed by Daniel Fischer, GSB president and senior in agricultural business, at Wednesday’s GSB meeting.

The position is in charge of providing “an intermediate between student government and the city council,” said Jonathan Turk, Speaker of the Senate and junior in political science.

Tracy became interested in the City Council Liaison position upon hearing about it from friend and GSB Vice President Maggie Luttrell, senior in history. Tracy hopes to instill a “more active dialogue between GSB and City Council,” she said.

Tracy said she would also like to work with the city council and make improvements to Campustown. She said Campustown should be “rejuvenated” and be a place with “more than just bars.”

Tracy is also a strong advocate for exploring the possibility of appointing a Landlord Tenant Liaison in Ames City Council.

“Two-thirds of Iowa State students live off-campus,” Tracy said. “I want someone who’s an advocate for [those students] and is looking out for their rights.”

Tracy has served as secretary since April, and thus GSB will need to seat a new student in that position.

“We should be appointing a secretary by next week’s meeting,” Fischer said. One student has already applied for the position and has been through the formal interview process, Fisher said.

In addition to appointing a new city council liaison, GSB welcomed a new Student Union Village senator to the committee at Wednesday’s meeting.

Melissa Jakubauskas, graduate student in apparel, educational studies and hospitality management, was enthusiastic about the position. Jakubauskas said she would like to see an improvement in the quality of Schilletter and University Village.

“We need to find a way to get funding for SUV. There are families living there with small children, and it’s dirty,” Jakubauskas said. “I would like to be a strong voice for SUV.”

Cyclone Stampede Rodeo representatives were present at Wednesday’s meeting to request a transfer of $566.64 for advertising and $360.00 for renting portable toilets for the event, which will be taking place on Oct. 3.

Cyclone Stampede Rodeo was granted funds from GSB earlier this semester and ended up with leftover money due to a few unspecified, necessary items that were donated for the event. GSB voted in favor of the transfer of the funds.

On Monday, the GPSS voted against helping GSB fund laptops for the Memorial Union.

Tom Danielson, finance director and senior in civil engineering, said he was unsure of what the outcome would be, so before the laptop funding bill was approved, he added that GSB would fund the entirety if GPSS did not vote in favor of helping fund the laptops.

“This is the first bill I’ve seen where both GSB and GPSS contributed. I wasn’t sure what the outcome would be,” Danielson said.
