LETTERS: Senator’s quick actions qualify him for re-election

I didn’t think I’d be voting for an incumbent this year — let alone writing a letter of support for one — but Tom Latham’s actions last year show he’s a sincere man of action.

A friend of mine was found dead on his bunk in Iraq as a result of a gunshot wound to the head. An Army investigation concluded he had committed suicide, despite evidence of foul play. Having served with him during his previous tour, I knew it was improbable, if not impossible, for a man so full of life to commit suicide. His family, to whom he’d expressed fear for his life for discovering something he shouldn’t have, knew he didn’t do it.

After speaking with several mutual friends who echoed my sentiments, I contacted Rep. Latham’s office to see what could be done. Without delay, Latham mobilized his staff and met with fellow legislators — Republicans and Democrats — to convince the Army to re-open the investigation.

Politicians rarely follow through when it comes to taking care of their constituents. Many of them give a lot of lip service to supporting the troops. Tom Latham is different. Not only did he listen to my concerns, he worked with his colleagues to ensure a level of effort proportionate to the dedication this Soldier had for his country.

Tom Latham hasn’t let Washington go to his head. We need more elected officials like Tom.
