The Student Union Board (SUB) at Iowa State is in charge of creating and promoting on-campus events that are available to students and the public.

SUB offers a wide variety of entertainment throughout the semester. Whatever your entertainment poison, SUB probably has an event to quench your thirst.

The Maintenance Shop, or as it is commonly called, The M-Shop, holds a variety of live shows in the Memorial Union. The M-Shop commonly hosts student comedy competitions and live bands. Performers that have graced the stage here include Lauv, Andy Grammer, The Lumineers and more that span over a spectrum of music genres.

In addition to shows at The M-shop, SUB also hosts ISU AfterDark. AfterDark is an event that takes place two or three times per semester in the Memorial Union. SUB brings in two different acts to perform for the student body.

The first act goes on at 9 p.m. and the following act performs at 11 p.m. In addition to celebrity performances, AfterDark always has additional fun events offered, such as karaoke, arts and crafts, lottery winnings, bowling and much more.

The performances, the food and all of the other activities at every AfterDark event are always free.

“We generate ideas of who we want to bring for AfterDark,” said Diego Bonilla, sophomore in event management and the Student Union Board’s Multicultural Awareness co-director. Past AfterDark guests have included Pete Davidson, Woody Harrelson and Camila Mendes.

SUB is always looking for more entertaining acts to bring to campus, and according to Steven Chounlamany, the special events co-director of SUB, they are sure to take what the students want into consideration.

“We usually have a conversation on who the college campus would like to see in AfterDark,” he said.

Yet another SUB activity that caters to the students is Cyclone Cinema, where different movies are shown on a weekly basis of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. every Thursday to Sunday.

Cyclone Cinema films cover a wide range of genres, such as action, comedy, drama and more. The films shown are recent releases and are likely to show at Cyclone Cinema before each film’s DVD release. Cyclone Cinema is completely free to the public.

For anyone who loves some laughs there is SUB Comedy Night, a stand-up show with a featured comedian that takes place every one to two months during the school year. Past Comedy Nights have hosted some well-known funny people, such as Daphnique Springs, Asif Ali and Moses Storm. You’ll find the laughter at the M-Shop, where the event takes place at 8:30 p.m.

Last but not least, one of SUB’s largest and newest additions to its activity roster for the school year is its SUB Outdoor Concert.

After the cancellation of Veishea in 2014, the return of an outdoor concert in a larger scale was a welcome idea. The first concert took place at the Molecular Biology Parking Lot on the north side of campus in the spring of 2018, headlined by Fetty Wap and supported by Cheat Codes, Kyle and Andreas Moss.

Tickets for the 2019 concert were $25 to $39 and feature singers Ella Mai and Bazzi.
