GSB to seat city council liaison
September 30, 2008
The Government of the Student Body’s city council liaison will be seated at Wednesday’s GSB meeting.
Molly Tracy, junior in anthropology, will be seated as GSB’s new city council liaison and will take on the responsibility of informing students of what is occurring in the city of Ames. Tracy was appointed by Daniel Fischer, GSB president and senior in agricultural business.
Fischer said he is confident in his decision to appoint Tracy, since she has already served on the GSB cabinet as the secretary.
“Molly has been involved with some talks of big projects so we feel comfortable with her since she’s been on cabinet,” Fischer said.
Maggie Luttrell, GSB vice president and senior in history, who served as city council liaison last year, agreed with Fischer.
“Molly has the greatest potential and experience,” Luttrell said. “I’ve known Molly since she’s been here at Iowa State.”
There were two other applicants who applied for the position. Fischer said the applicants had been through interviews previously. He said the interviews were spread out, but that he became familiar with all three applicants. In addition, Luttrell said the resumes of all three applicants were “very telling on experience.”
The liaison has the responsibility of attending Ames City Council meetings and keeping in contact with the Daily’s city beat reporter, in order to keep tabs on what is going on in the city, Luttrell said.
In the past, the liaison has been involved with informing students about city projects, including street construction and the new Furman Aquatic Center, Luttrell said.
This year, the City Council liaison will be dealing with a series of large projects, including GSB’s exploration of the “feasibility of recreating the landlord liaison,” Fischer said.
The landlord liaison is responsible for handling disputes between landlords and tenants and acts as a “clearing house” for property owners, Fischer said.
The city council landlord liaison position was cut in the early 2000s because of budget cuts made by the state, but GSB believes this position is an important part of the City Council, Fischer said.
GSB plans to meet with Ames Mayor Ann Campbell to discuss bringing back the landlord liaison position, which, Fischer said, the City Council liaison would play a roll in.
