Funding for laptops approved by GSB
September 16, 2008
After three weeks of debate, the funding for laptops for the Memorial Union passed unanimously.
The Government of the Student Body voted to allocate $18,334.50 minus the amount that the Graduate and Professional Student Senate plans to contribute to the cause.
The allocation is scheduled to occur on Oct. 1. However, the amount of funds GPSS will allocate has yet to be determined as the organization meets at the end of the month and has not yet discussed the matter. If GPSS does not intend to provide funds for the laptops, GSB will continue with the allocations without the financial aid of GPSS. Ryan Myers, graduate senator and graduate student in accounting, said he hopes GPSS will allocate funds for new laptops.
Nathan Rockman, off -campus government senator and senior in political science, raised a concern about advertising the new laptops. Rockman worried that the student body would not take advantage of the new laptops after they are purchased.
Gail Ferlazzo, GSB advisor and associate director of the Memorial Union, said they plan to advertise primarily by word of mouth.
“We are able to advertise with no cost,” Ferlazzo said.
A notification that the laptop service has been reinstated will be sent out from the newsline — an e-mail newsletter which reaches 3,000 individuals, Ferlazzo said. In addition to the newsletter, Ferlazzo said once the laptop supply is exhausted at other sources such as the Durham Center, associates of those locations will direct students to the Memorial Union laptop service.
The Malaysian Cultural night — scheduled to take place on Oct. 26 — has confirmed possession of the funds it received from GSB. The organization was thankful GSB was able to provide the $2,000 for international food as they are expecting 400 guests to attend the event.
Jamison Arends, freshman in pre-business was seated as a business senator.
“I want students in my constituency to know that GSB exists and wants to help them,” Arends said. “I’ll talk to freshman and give them info about GSB and let them know we’re open to their ideas.”
The Campustown Senate will be holding a meeting Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at Stomping Grounds Cafe, 303 Welch Ave. # 101. Students are invited to give their suggestions on how to improve Campustown.
