Semitrailer fire closes I-35 near New Virginia

NEW VIRGINIA, Iowa (AP) — Interstate 35 has reopened and residents are being allowed to return home after a semitrailer carrying an explosive chemical caught fire near New Virginia.
The highway was closed in both directions and residents within a two-mile radius of the site were evacuated after the semi caught fire about 6 a.m. Sunday
The Iowa State Patrol says the semi was carrying potassium nitrate.
A hazardous materials team from Des Moines responded to the site.
The highway reopened early Sunday afternoon.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was conducting tests at the site, which is near the South River.
Official with the patrol say it appears that all chemicals were contained.
The driver of the semi was taken to an area hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
